Hopefully, by this point you have purchased the book I spoke about in Part 1, If not thats fine but it will help you in the future.. Part 2 of this ongoing blog will breeze thru the different types of Modeling. Just in case you didn’t know there are many different kinds of modeling, not just Runway, Commercial or Glamour.
It is important to know and choose a type of modeling before you begin taking pictures, going on castings, and etc. This will help you narrow down your research and will help you stay on track. Meaning if you want to be a High Fashion model but you are only 5’2, knowing that you are not the proper height requirement before hand will help you choose another area of modeling and will also help you not get scammed by some of these “Fake Agencies” selling you exactely what it is.. a Dream.
The types of modeling are:
Fashion:This is wear height and look play a major role.. Most Fashion models (female) are 5’9 – up.. Kate Moss is an exception but not everyone is Kate Moss.. and for guys its 6′- up… The range in sizes can go from 0-4 sometimes 6 these are usually the sizes of the samples designers make.. The thought is that you are a walking hanger.. You are there to show the clothes.. Some models get past that but there are always exceptions..
–Editorial: Think of Elle, Bazzar, Vogue.. the models you see wearing the “New” trends are referred to as Editorial models..
–Runway: This is self explanatory.. Fashion week… duh..
–Catalog: Along the lines of JcPenny, Macy catalogs…
–Print: This is when a designer uses a model to advertise their line.. Guess, YSL. Gucci to name a few
–Show room: This is when you model a designers clothes for the buyers/investors..
–Lingerie: This is when you have the right body proportions for lingerie modeling.. Vicki Secrets which can also be seen as Glamour….
Fitness: Think health magazines or GNC advertisements… Yepp there are agencies for this..
Fit: This is when designers use your measurements to make the clothes.. Its good money too..
Body Part: You know.. When you only see the feet, hands, legs, back arms.. Yup but you have to be damn near flawless for this one..
Commercial and Print:This is what they call the “Everyday” person section.. Cause literally anyone can fit into one of these types… Its the “Real” people section.. It usually has the viewer relate to the model..
–Product.. Think a mom using a swifter in a photo.. Real person, real life.. using a product… even for commercials ( You can catch me in the Lucille Roberts Commercial, shameless plug lol)
–Lifestyle: Real people doing everyday things.. Talking to your friends, walking in the park, exercising in the gym ( I did this one before and it showed up in Essence lol.)..
Here is an example of a lifestyle shoot I did with a photographer named John Ricard..
Promotional: This is when you are helping to advertise a product live.. Think the models in the club wearing a companies shirt and passing out buttons that lite up with the products name on it.. A lot of alcohol companies use this method as a way of advertisement..
Trade Show: This is when you model the clothes at clothing functions and advertise the clothes to attract buyers to your booth. ( I did this at the Majic and Project Conventions.. Long days but fun)
Glamour: Ahh this ranges from the Smooths, Maxims, FHMs to Playboy. Either way its the sexier, more sensual side of modeling.. Victoria Secerets fits into this as well.. ( Check out my Smooth spread in the portfolio section Hot!!)
